With more than 15 years of experience in the industry, Shandon Photography knows exactly how to make your photoshoot a complete success. Here are somethings to consider before, during and after the session to make the process go as smoothly as possible and get amazing headshots.
Preparation is crucial to having a successful headshot session. We can’t stress this enough. Prior to your session, it’s in your best interest to:
Consult with Your Agent or Manager – It’s important to talk with them prior to the shoot. They likely have a very specific idea of how to market you and may see you differently than you see yourself, or they want to accommodate a specific trend. Some agencies are particular about the clothing you wear or style in the photography. Get a solid opinion on how you should represent yourself before showing them the proofs.
Groom Ahead – Don’t wait until the day before your shoot to do last minute haircuts/coloring/waxing. We want you at your best, not while you’re healing (physically or emotionally).
What To Wear – Choose colors that compliment your own coloring. Consider what looks good with your eyes, hair or skin tone. Most commercial agents prefer bright, colorful clothing with little or no pattern. This allows the focus to remain on you. Wear the kinds of clothing your characters would wear by researching the type of film and television roles you and your agent see yourself playing. Bring more than what you think you will wear – our team will help you select the best choices from your wardrobe.
If you are having difficulty, our team can provide wardrobe consultations and personal shopping experiences for a reasonable fee.
Like any other part of the entertainment industry, your photo shoot is a collaborative process. Shandon Photography provides comprehensive services to ensure you receive the best possible representation. Here’s what you can expect during the shoot:
We provide a comfortable environment to wait in and prepare for your shoot. Before each session we look at clothing options and choose the outfits that will give you the most variety for your shoot. After choosing clothing, we discuss makeup and hair options for each look, creating a precise game plan for the session.
After planning, we get you into hair and makeup. Our trained makeup artists spend about 45 minutes consulting with you and applying your makeup. Light hair styling is included, but we suggest you come with you hair styled as if you were going to an addition. The makeup artist will stay during the session for touchups and augmentation to complement your different outfits.
The emphasis is variety. When we are shooting, we make sure to give you a wide array of lighting and location setups, providing not just a physical context to your shot, but also atmosphere. Your photos should tell stories. Shandon will coach and direct you through the shoot, supplying you with objectives and embedding emotional context to your shots. This allows you to show your range as an actor.
Expect technical excellence on our part. The photos will be lit, composed and exposed correctly. The shots will be in focus and accurately balanced in color and tone. This may sound obvious, but we are consistently surprised by the lack of technical precision in our clients’ portfolios from previous shoots with other photographers. With Shandon Photography, it’s not uncommon for clients to forget to process the photos after the shoot because they look so good right out of the camera. We shoot for diversity and accuracy every time.
In turn, we expect a few things on your part. Please arrive on time (or early). This allows you to be more relaxed and focus on the shoot. Be prepared. And be willing to provide the emotional connection. We are working hard to pull your most marketable qualities out, but we can’t do it alone. Let your personality shine and we’ll capture it to the best of our ability.
Trust us. There’s a reason you came to Shandon instead of having your friend snap a couple of pics of you in your backyard.
Once you’ve viewed and chosen the photos you will use in your marketing, our team can prep them before printing or posting to the web. Every photo can be adjusted to improve the dynamic range or digitally altered to remove distractions and keep the attention on you and your energy. Photo optimization adjusts the contrast, tone, color and saturation of your photos. We can provide custom color enhancements and seamless retouching.
Our philosophy is simple. Eliminate distractions and that’s it. Whether it’s a small blemish or a logo on a shirt, we can remove it so the focus of the photo is on you and your energy. And while we can provide alterations to the shape of your body or structure of your face, proceed with caution. If a casting director is calling you because of your photo, you have a certain level of responsibility to show up to the audition looking lie it.
When we prepare your photos for duplication, you are ensured the highest quality of service and expertise.
You have several options for retouch, preparation and printing. Over the years we’ve seen that retouchers and pressmen are as varied in quality as photographers. Our photo finishing department is skilled in the art of portrait retouching. We know all the tricks to make retouching look seamless, leaving you looking great while keeping the photo organic. We also have software and monitors calibrated to the labs of our choice, so there is no guess work when it comes to color and tone adjustment.
